Upedtrace

Tracing polymer contamination back to its source.

Upedtrace is developing a new approach to give polymer-based pharmaceutical consumables a recoverable source identity — helping investigators identify or rule out the specific source of material found during a contamination investigation.

ABOUT UPEDTRACE

A different approach to material traceability

Pharmaceutical contamination investigations can often determine what an unexpected polymer material is, but identifying the specific consumable or material source it came from can remain difficult or inconclusive.

Upedtrace is developing a way to give polymer materials a recoverable source identity incorporated during manufacturing. If material later appears as contamination, established elemental analysis could be used to recover that identity and help investigators identify or exclude its registered source. The underlying identification principle has now been demonstrated in an independent proof-of-concept experiment. Marker identity incorporated into polypropylene was recovered at all five tested locations, while no marker identity was detected in the unmarked control.Development is continuing toward application in pharmaceutical consumables, beginning with cleanroom materials.
